Buying cheap furniture really is a false economy and though money is often tight we urge you to look past the price and consider what it is that you are buying.
When a local Head Teacher purchased a tray storage unit from a competitor's slick clearance magazine I asked what had influenced her decision. She indicated that it was because it was cheap. After comparing the price, it appeared that the unit was £12 cheaper than our own at that time.
Two weeks after its flat-pack arrival and construction by the school caretaker I studied the tray storage unit and was shocked to discover that it was made using cheap, faced 18mm chipboard (MFC). The material might look comparable to MDF but it does not have the strength characteristics per sheet and caused the surfaces to bow and buckle under the smallest of weights. The joints had been formed by butting-up the pieces of MFC and driving a screw through to hold the unit together.
Despite this unit requiring daily use in school I could not see how this item of furniture could provide the necessary daily use within the classroom safely and consistently for any period of time. In an attempt to stop the base of the unit from touching the floor under the weight of full trays a third wheel had been included in the centre of the unit. At the time of my visit the tray storage unit skewed with the lightest of touches as it had no additional support structure and gained nothing from the 2mm flimsy back section that may even have been a piece of faced cardboard!
